I Just Watched Thunderbolts — And I’ve Never Felt More Proud to Be Malaysian

I just watched Thunderbolts, and let me tell you—I couldn’t sit still in my seat. Not because of the action (although that was top-tier Marvel stuff), but because Merdeka 118—our very own national pride and architectural icon—was featured loud and proud in a Hollywood blockbuster. And not just Merdeka 118. Medan Pasar made it too.

As someone in real estate who’s spent years promoting the value of Malaysia, this was a moment that truly hit home.

From Merdeka 118 to Medan Pasar — KL Was the Star

We’re used to seeing New York, London, or Paris on the big screen. But this time, it was Kuala Lumpur—and it looked magnificent.

The film features Florence Pugh’s character performing a jaw-dropping leap off the Merdeka 118 tower. The director confirmed she did the stunt herself, which only adds to the drama. The tower wasn’t just a backdrop—it was a character in the film. Towering, majestic, unforgettable.

But what really tugged at my heart was seeing Medan Pasar—yes, our charming old market square with pre-war shophouses and colonial facades—used in the film. That scene alone is a perfect blend of Malaysia’s soul: where modern ambition meets historical charm. It’s a reminder that we’re not just another city—we’re Kuala Lumpur, and we’ve got layers.

Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia were mentioned several times in the dialogue too. Not some vague “Southeast Asian city,” but Malaysia. By name. Repeatedly. That’s a huge deal.

Why This Matters More Than We Think

This kind of exposure doesn’t come by often. A Marvel film seen by millions around the globe has just given Malaysia—and KL in particular—a front-row seat on the world stage. And it’s not just a cinematic moment. It’s a real opportunity.

Global viewers will start Googling, “What is Merdeka 118?” or “Where is Medan Pasar?” Some will stumble upon Malaysia’s urban transformation. Some will fall in love with the blend of heritage and high-rise. A few may even ask: Can foreigners buy property in Malaysia?

You see where I’m going with this.

As someone who deals with international buyers, I can tell you: visibility sparks curiosity. And curiosity drives investment.

Real Estate Can Ride This Wave

Malaysia has always been an underrated gem in the real estate world. We’ve got affordability, quality of life, free public healthcare, tax-friendly policies, and a multi-cultural society that speaks English. Compared to other regional players, our property prices are still incredibly competitive.

With the help of programs like MM2H, Malaysia is already on the radar of investors and retirees from places like China, Japan, Korea, Europe, and the Middle East. Now, thanks to Thunderbolts, we’ve got a cultural reference point that makes Malaysia instantly more relatable.

This isn’t just great PR—it’s a platform for long-term positioning. Whether you’re selling high-end KLCC condos, heritage-style Airbnb homes in the city, or even commercial space near historic districts like Medan Pasar—this is the kind of momentum we can build on.

And to Bill O’Reilly…

A quick side note. Not long ago, American political commentator Bill O’Reilly called Malaysia a “poor country” where people are “barely eating.” He clearly hasn’t been here—or read up on our infrastructure, tech innovation, or rising middle class.

So here’s my message to Mr. O’Reilly: Watch Thunderbolts. See Merdeka 118 for yourself. Walk through Medan Pasar. Then tell me if we look like a poor, struggling country. Our buildings touch the clouds. Our culture runs deep. And our people? Thriving.

Malaysia, Framed in Marvel

When I walked out of the cinema, I wasn’t just buzzing because I saw our skyline on screen—I was fired up about what this could mean for our future. Not just for tourism, not just for pride—but for business, for investment, for real estate.

Let’s seize this moment. Let’s show the world that Malaysia isn’t just a place to visit—it’s a place to call home.
