It was 7:30 AM when I stepped out of my apartment balcony, expecting the usual morning skyline โ Petronas Towers standing tall against a blue or sometimes cloudy backdrop.
Instead, I was greeted by a wall of grey.
Not the moody, cinematic kind you see in European films. This was the heavy, grainy kind that made even the nearest condo blocks look like theyโd been brushed over with ash. I took a breath โ and immediately regretted it. The air felt dense, dry, almost metallic.
I opened my phone and tapped the air quality app. AQI: 110. PM2.5: 39.3 ยตg/mยณ. A neat little line below told me, โUnhealthy for Sensitive Groups.โ I thought of my neighbours โ the elderly uncle who walks every morning, the kids who play badminton by the pool, my asthmatic colleague who never remembers his inhaler.
This is haze season.

Where It Comes From

f youโve lived in Malaysia long enough, you know the haze narrative all too well. This yearโlike clockworkโthe skies have dimmed, but thereโs more to it than just โburn, drift, arrive.โ
Fires Burning Across the Sea
The haze youโre seeing stems from forest and peatland fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan (Borneo), ignited largely by farmers using the slash-and-burn method to clear land cheaply and quickly during the dry Southwest Monsoon (July to October). These fires release thick, pollutant-rich smoke that drifts across borders under prevailing winds ๏ฟผ ๏ฟผ.
API vs. AQI โ Two Measures, One Story
Here at home, we typically rely on the Malaysian Air Pollution Index (API), which averages multiple pollutantsโPM2.5, PM10, CO, Oโ, SOโ, and NOโโover 24 hours ๏ฟผ. In contrast, trackers like IQAir give near real-time hourly AQI readings, focused mainly on PM2.5 ๏ฟผ. Think of API as the slow-cooked version, and AQI as the quick, spicy snapshot.
Patterns from the Past
- 2015: The regionโs worst on record, with some Indonesian areas registering API over 1,800. The fires cost billions to mitigate and prompted widespread school closures. Rain in late October finally cleared the air .
- 2019: Rompinโs API climbed to 223 (โVery Unhealthyโ), triggering school shutdowns. It was a stark reminder that when the winds shift or rains hold off, visibility tanks fast .
These events arenโt historical odditiesโthey are repeat performances shaped by weather patterns, weak enforcement, and economic incentives prioritising land-clearing speed over environmental health
What It Does to Us
At AQI levels above 100, people with asthma, heart problems, kids, and the elderly feel it first โ coughs, sore throats, watery eyes. But even if youโre healthy, the fine particles (PM2.5) can sneak into your lungs and bloodstream over time.
I felt my throat itching already.
What Iโm Doing Differently This Week

- Windows shut, purifier on. My trusty HEPA filter is humming away in the corner.
- Mask in my pocket. N95 if I can, otherwise a clean surgical one.
- More water. Not coffee (sadly), but actual water โ the boring hero.
- No outdoor jogs. My lungs are not running a marathon through smoke.
A Small Reminder
Itโs easy to brush this off. The haze isnโt dramatic like a flood or an earthquake. But it chips away quietly โ every breath you take outdoors on a bad day adds up.
So if you can, stay in. If you must go out, mask up. And check the AQI before making plans. You wouldnโt drive without checking petrol; donโt breathe without checking the air.
Tomorrow, the wind might shift, the rain might fall, and weโll see the skyline again.
But until then, take care of your lungs. Theyโre the only pair youโve got.
